History of Yarrow Essential Oil
Yarrow’s history as a medicinal herb can be traced back to the ancient Greek hero Achilles. Legend has it that Achilles used this herb to stop the bleeding, prevent infection and treat his wounds and the wounds of his soldiers during the historic Trojan War. The scientific name of the herb is Achillea Millefolium, which is derived from this reference. It is known in other cultures by different names including devil’s nettle, old man’s pepper, soldier’s woundwort, and nosebleed plant.
From early times, yarrow has been used extensively in herbal medicine to bring down acute fever, ease inflammation and gastric distress, soothe inflamed skin, stop the bleeding and prevent infection in case of wounds, and to reduce excessive menstrual blood flow.
Growing, Harvesting & Extraction
Yarrow is a hardy herb that grows well even in conditions that would cause most other herbs to wilt away. The warm sunny weather and dry soil create an excellent environment for growing yarrow with an exceptionally high essential oil yield.
The plants are gathered at peak maturity, when the flowers are filled with their therapeutic components. The process is fully mechanized so that the plants can be harvested and transported to the distillery as quickly and as efficiently as possible. This helps to minimize the loss of the plant’s inherent components.
At our steam distillery located nearby, the plants are processed under the supervision of experienced professionals.
